J Class World Championships in Newport, Rhode Island

The Lawn at Castle Hill is the premier spot in Newport, Rhode Island to view the historic J Class World Championship sailing races, all while enjoying Castle Hill Inn’s classic New England al fresco dining. The racing event runs now through Saturday, August 26th.

Nestled on a 40-acre peninsula overlooking Narragansett Bay, Castle Hill Inn has captured the imaginations of guests from around the world with its enchanting coastal setting, relaxed elegance and authentic Newport spirit for more than a century.

J Class refers to a specific type of single-masted racing yacht, built according to design rules introduced in 1903 by renowned naval architect Nathaniel Herreshoff of Bristol, RI. Six of the nine J class boats in existence will be competing in the races this week. The boats feature elegant silhouettes, large sail areas, and are approximately 130-140 feet in length.

To learn to sail yourself, Castle Hill Inn offers a Sailing Escape package. Guests who book this package have the chance to learn to sail on picturesque Narragansett Bay. The package includes a two-night stay at the Inn, breakfast and afternoon tea, a private three-hour sailing lesson, a sunset cruise on a 72-foot charter schooner, dinner at the Mooring and a festive Castle Hill Inn tote bag, filled with snacks from Executive Chef Lou Rossi.
