A Solo Journey to Camden, Maine Where the Mountains Kiss the Sea

A Solo Journey to Camden, Maine — Where the Mountains Kiss the Sea
By Linda from New England Fine Living

Hello Kindred Spirit,

There was something special about setting off alone, without much of a plan, just a Kindred Spirit travel mug full of coffee, a tiny vase of fresh flowers set into one of the cup holders, an umbrella, and a slow driving adventure ahead of me. In this week’s video, I invite you to join me on a spontaneous two-day solo journey through New England, where I drove as few highway roads as possible and follow winding roads up the coast to a most charming village “where the mountains kiss the sea”… Camden, Maine.

I thought it was supposed to be sunny, but I was perfectly fine with the trip starting under gray skies (and a lot of rain here and there). With catmint and dianthus tucked in a juice glass from the kitchen cabinet, and a couple of cameras in tow, I made my way northeast pausing here and there to admire old homes, pop into antique shops, and enjoy my solo trip to Camden, Maine.

When I arrived in Camden, I was surprised to find a parking spot right in the village center, since it is usually busy on Summer days. I checked into the Lord Camden Inn, a quaint and comfortable stay with a view of the little river below. It wasn’t the grand oceanfront hotel I had originally considered, but it was just right.

The town was full of tourists, but not busy like I had expected. I spent the afternoon poking into shops, finding inspiration in window boxes full of black petunias and homes painted in wonderful historic oceanside colors. I even stumbled across a company called Second Story Builders carefully salvaging architectural pieces from a historic home. What a name! It made me think about the stories we carry and those we choose to build upon.

Later, I enjoyed a cocktail and a light supper alone, with a book and my thoughts for company. I picked up A Short Guide to a Happy Life in town and read it cover to cover. Fitting, I think, for a trip like this.

On day two, I visited the venue for my stepson’s upcoming wedding, the Samoset Resort, where we worked on wedding details, napkin folds, and a touch of florals. Then, I detoured to Cabot Mill Antiques, a beautiful space filled with treasures and curiosities, the perfect place for an afternoon wander.

By the end of my drive, the rain stopped and the now setting sun started to peek out from behind the clouds. It was the perfect end to a two day getaway to the coast of Maine.

I hope you’ll enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed filming it. Perhaps it will inspire you to plan your own slow solo journey.

Best,
Linda
